Marc Berner Notes of Justice
Marc Berner, flutist, saxophonist and vocalist, sat down with our team to share his passions, not only for music but also for social justice and environmental awareness. His parents were artistic, musical, socially conscious, and encouraged his musicianship from an early age. They were very active in the struggle for civil rights beginning in the late '50s and early '60s and Marc is honored to carry on their legacy. He also inherited a keen sense of humor and draws upon it every day to spread laughter and connection in our ailing world.
As a musician, what is one song that best embodies the time we are living in?
There are many of course, but the one that comes immediately to mind is Curtis Mayfield’s “People Get Ready”, my favorite version of which is by the late Kings of A Cappella, Jerry Lawson and The Persuasions.

Why is investing responsibly important to you?
I feel an urgent need to contribute in my own small way at this critical time.
How do you keep your cynicism at bay?
I practice “keeping my heart open in hell”, as the late poet, author and teacher Stephen Levine so aptly wrote.
What's a guilty pleasure you enjoy to stay sane and recharge?
Though I hardly feel it a “guilty pleasure”, I am an avid Scrabble player and play whenever I can find the time.
Astronauts call it the overview effect: a shift in awareness when humans view the totality of their home planet. What do you see when you view our Earth from afar?
A photo of Earth from afar evokes many different feelings. The first is utter and absolute awe. The second is sadness for the current state of the world. And the third is oneness and love.
