Cristina Mittermeier has spent her career turning images of the ocean into a force for protecting it. A marine biologist turned photographer, she helped pioneer the field of conservation photography and is now a renowned National Geographic photographer and co-founder of the ocean conservation nonprofit SeaLegacy. She brings that same conviction to her finances, investing in a fossil-free portfolio that reflects the planet she’s fighting for. She sat down with our team to share why sustainable investing matters to her and what surprised her most along the way.
How does sustainable investing align with your work at SeaLegacy?

What has surprised you most about investing sustainably?
I believe doing the right thing is its own reward. What I didn’t realize is that there is no tradeoff between great performance and investing in a sustainable world. It feels good to not compromise!
What was the largest obstacle in switching to sustainable investments?
Traditional firms make it difficult to switch to sustainable investments, or to even have a conversation about them. Blue Marble made it super easy and now I have a fossil fuel free portfolio.
